Bolton Based Sushma'snacks A Hit With Wanderers Fans

Bolton News Article By Chloe Wilson, 1 Oct 2022

A small business owner from Great Lever is reaching new heights as her chicken tikka naans become popular at the home matches of Bolton Wanderers Football Club.

Gone are the days of pies and chips at a football match, fans in Bolton are now having a taste of East meets West fusion cuisines at the Fan Zone outside the stadium.

Sushma Solanki, 52, has hit the headlines in recent weeks after her food stand Sushma’snacks became so popular by football fans with her featuring on Footy Scran, a social media account showing the best and worst scran at the football.

Speaking about her success, Sushma said she is overwhelmed.

She said: “I was put on Footy Scran about two or three weeks ago and I was rated on there, one of the supporters posted my chicken tikka naan on there and I got 15,700 likes and then it hit a national newspaper that I ran out in an hour-and- a-half and then last Saturday I was in The Mirror with my ‘naan of the match’ story, so it has been welcomed really well and the supporters have been brilliant.

“The Fan Zone is amazing the way it is working at the minute and all the supporters just love it.

“I’m here every home game and offer a chicken tikka naan, sheesh kebab naan with salad and sauce, the chilli garlic fries and the kebdog.

“I’m very happy Bolton Wanderers have took on a small business like me and supporting a woman running a small business after all the difficult times with Covid and times are getting difficult at the minute with the price rises but I am going to stick with my prices as much as I can and hope I can keep it to that price.”

When The Bolton News asked Sushma if the pie and chips are long gone, she said: “I don’t know if they’re off the menu, you can still get pies inside, but this is outside in the Fan Zone and I think fans have now warmed up to not eating just the pies.”

Sushma said the support from the Bolton fans is really helping during the cost-of-living crisis.

She said: “The cost-of-living crisis has impacted me because the food and ingredients are becoming so expensive every day and I don’t know how long we can carry on like this.

“The support from the fans is really helping and through them there has been loads of people that work with companies and so I’m going to another company to do their lunch for the day.

“A few other football clubs have also been in touch with me to work with them too.

“I’m getting a lot more business out of it and the support has been amazing.

“I’m overwhelmed with the support that I’ve had, it’s all very positive.

“Even the club, even the chairman, the CEO and the whole team have been supportive from the top boss to even the cleaners have been supportive of me, they’re all so happy and we have a great time.

“Some customers have even approached me to tell me that they won’t be at the next game because they’re on holiday and not to worry because they will be back, the support has been fantastic.”

Chicken Tikka Naan Sells Out In Minutes After "Unreal" Photo Goes Viral

Bolton News Article By Thomas Molloy, 27 Aug 2022

A Bolton caterer says she has been ‘amazed’ with the reaction to her chicken tikka naan that has gone viral on social media. One photograph of the culinary creation has racked up hundreds of retweets and more than 13,000 likes on the ‘Footy Scran’ Twitter account.

Food fans branded the naan ‘unreal’ and one even joked “Suddenly I’m a Bolton fan,” in response to the treat, which is served out of the Sushma Snacks stall at Bolton Wanderers’ new fan zone – open to Whites fans before and after every single home match at the University of Bolton Stadium. It has proved so popular that it completely sold out within minutes of going on sale prior to Tuesday night’s cup tie against Aston Villa.

Business owner and cook Sushma Solanki said she can’t quite believe what has happened and has vowed to prepare double the amount for Bolton’s next home game. “I’m pretty shocked. Basically a couple of guys have come every week since the fanzone opened and they put a photo on social media,” she told the Manchester Evening News .

“They hadn’t tagged me so I didn’t see it but when I did look, I think it had 1,300 likes. On Tuesday, I took about 10kg of chicken tikka and it sold out in less than an hour. By the end of the day I was just left with one bag of salad.

“I got home and it had been posted an account called Footy Scran and it’s been liked more than 13,000 times, they even messaged be telling me I’d ‘smashed it’. It’s only chicken tikka naan! It’s amazing what’s happened.”

After going viral, Sushma made headlines in national newspapers and has even been on radio to talk about the meal. “My friend rang me and told me it was in The Sun. I thought she was taking the p***”, she laughed

“I’ve had messages off people asking to take orders but unfortunately I can’t do that. I’m going to get over 20kg for the next game though.

“Even the away fans are asking for it. That to me is amazing. It’s brilliant for the club and the owners have been so supportive.

“I’m not a big business like Carrs Pasties, I run this thing myself but since this I’ve had Rochdale AFC asking me to do food, Leigh Centurions Rugby Club and even had pubs asking me to run their kitchen!”

This weekend, Sushma is cooking up some food for the ‘Afternoon Tea with a Twist’ event, which is being hosted by Lisa Riley, at Bolton Food and Drink Festival. She is also doing a free cookery demonstration

'UNREAL' Fans are all saying the same thing about Bolton’s matchday food as chicken tikka naan picture goes viral

The Sun Article By Alex Smith, 24 Aug 2022

FANS are all saying the same thing after a picture emerged online of food at Bolton Wanderers.

The snap uploaded to Twitter shows a chicken tikka naan with garlic fries ready to be washed down with a pint of beer, all priced at £8.

Supporters could not believe what they were seeing and for such good value.

One said: “Scran all day long.”

Another thought it was fantastic saying “unreal” with the love heart eyes emoji.

More supporters reacted: “Suddenly I’m a Bolton fan.”

Given the ever-increasing prices of food and drink at stadiums, a fan praised the price saying: “Good value especially at the footy.”

According to one of the Wanderers faithful this delicious looking food is served in the club’s new fanzone that has just opened this season.

The University of Bolton Stadium welcome Aston Villa last night in the Carabao Cup with the League One outfit losing 4-1 despite taking an early lead.

They may have not been able to cope on the pitch with the top flight side but they have Premier League standard food being served.

Bolton have got off to a solid start this season sitting seventh in League One and facing Plymouth next.

Their next home league game is versus Charlton and perhaps some Addicks fans will make the trip looking to find the now famous chicken tikka.

This is the second time dinner at stadiums has made the headlines recently, over in United States a baseball fan was pictured dipping a sausage into a beer.

He was then seen using the hot dog as a straw and social media was split between disgust and awe.
